2. Course description The course combines units of study which reflect the interests and career choices of each student. It enables you to achieve an academic standard acceptable for entry to higher education as well as a qualification which would enable you to find work in the caring services. All students will attend work experience in relevant placements. There will also be significant support for you in progressing to your chosen career and could be in a variety of settings such as nurseries, schools hospitals and care homes. The course aims to provide the core knowledge and skills for health and care work and opportunities to develop practical skills through assignments and work placements. The course features specialist pathways of study to help you train in your chosen field:   Childcare pathway: which will contain units such as Caring for Children and Young people and Working with Young people with Autistic spectrum disorder Nursing pathway: which will contain units such as Public Health, Communicable Diseases and Working in the Health Sector Care Pathway: which will contain units such as Caring for Older People and Working in the Social Care Sector.   These pathways have been planned to enable you to progress into a variety of careers or HE options in your specialist area of interest.

3. Entry requirements 4 GCSEs grade A*-C including English and Maths or equivalent (or  Merit or Distinction in a relevant subject at Level 2.)(Should students want to progress to higher education with the aim of entering the teaching/nursing profession, it is mandatory that they hold a minimum of 5 GCSEs A*-C including English, Maths and Science.) Equipment required All students undertaking work experience have to apply for enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance. At present the cost for this is £44. You will also be required to wear a college t-shirt when on placement which costs approximately £10. Assessment method You will be required to match the hours of teaching in college with private study. Although some private study time will be included during the timetabled week, including an assignment support workshop, you will need to undertake study at home to enable you to complete the set assignments. The BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 3 qualification is made up of 17 units of study. Assessment is by unit of study and all units will have assignment work set and marked by the teaching team. The internally set assessments will be varied in format and in some instances you may be asked to contribute to the design of an assessment. Such variety allows every student to show their particular talents whilst developing and extending other skills. You will be provided with deadlines for the specific assignment tasks.
