Why study Foundation Programme Health Professions?
The Foundation Course for Health Professions is Year zero of your degree course in the Allied Health Professions or Nursing and Midwifery departments at UWE Bristol. Primarily designed for mature students with few or no qualifications, or those who do not meet the normal entry requirements for an undergraduate BSc(Hons) degree, this unique course will give you a springboard into higher education.

The majority of teaching will take place at the City of Bristol College, supplemented by study at the University's Glenside Campus, with both sites offering outstanding learning facilities. This immersive course is taught by an inspirational team in a highly supportive environment and will provide you with tailored preparation for a seamless transition to your degree course. After satisfactorily completing the Foundation year you will progress onto one of the following UWE Bristol degrees:

Content

The Foundation course is full-time and the majority of the teaching takes place at the City of Bristol College, Ashley Down Centre. There will also be some study undertaken at the Department of Allied Health Professionals Glenside Campus in Bristol.

You will study the following modules:

Learning and Teaching

A variety of learning methods are employed. These include lectures, demonstrations, laboratory work, tutorials and small group work. The developmental nature of the courses requires active participation and will move you towards taking responsibility for your own learning.

The course aims to develop:

  • The skills and knowledge, including a solid science foundation, to undertake an undergraduate degree.
  • The core skills and knowledge to progress to a professional course.
  • An understanding of the use of research in relation to evidence based professional practice.
  • The skills to facilitate the progressive development of investigative skills.
  • Effective study and self management approaches.
  • Advancement and promotion of a value base that respects diversity.
  • Enhancement of key and transferable skills.
  • Self awareness, self direction and sensitivity to the needs of others.
  • Appropriate interpersonal skills, to enable effective integration and communication within a team.

Throughout the Foundation course, you will be supported in a study of the above in a number of ways including:

  • A personal tutorial scheme at City of Bristol College.
  • Vocational support and guidance from lecturers from the Department of Allied Health Professionals.
  • Negotiation and discussion of the contents of a learning contract with a personal tutor.
  • Support from module leaders and joint course co-ordinators.

Assessment

The course utilises a range of assessment strategies, including formal examination, oral presentations, written tests, assignments, project and laboratory reports, along with the creation of a portfolio of learning.
