Course Content

Working in care covers a wide range of jobs which broadly encompasses helping people get the most out of their every day lives by assisting them with health, hygiene emotional and spiritual needs. It is very much a ‘hands on’ job and will involve
working closely with clients, sometimes with intimate care
needs. People skills as well as patience, compassion and a
good sense of humour are essential for this type of work. The
following are examples of some of the duties that may be included
in Care work.

  • Helping clients with personal hygiene and grooming
    Helping clients with their medication
  • Preparing meals and assisting clients to eat and drink
  • Helping clients maintain good continence management
  • Assisting clients to keep their living space clean and tidy
  • Doing shopping for clients
  • Helping with activities which will provide mental and physical
    stimulation
  • Assisting clients to move and change position
  • Reporting changes in your clients’ condition
  • Keeping clear written records of health changes and activities
  • Working well within a team
  • Developing good relationships with your clients’ families and friends

Jobs may include:

  • Customer (Helpline)
  • Care assistant in a residential or nursing home working with the elderly
  • Working with people with learning disabilities
  • Working with children
  • Home care worker
  • Hospital nursing assistant

In general the training involves:
The Care training programme covers a range of modules
including: Communication, Health and Safety, Infection Control, Safeguarding Adults, Personal Development, the principles of Manual Handling, helping with personal hygiene, a basic
understanding of medications and their side effects, managing continence, food safety. The main training is practical and
‘hands on’.

Flexible training:
In addition to your NVQ in Health and Social Care you will have the opportunity to undertake other internal training modules at St. Loye’s. These will include Personal Development topics such as Building Self-Confidence and Communication Skills and an opportunity to improve your IT skills.

Level of training and qualification offered:

  • Level 2 NVQ in Health & social Care (The examining body for this is City and Guilds)

Our Person Centred approach:
Once funding has been agreed, you will be invited in for an assessment with a dedicated Case Manager who will discuss with you your skills, aspirations and abilities and from this confirm whether you are ready to start training for work with St. Loye’s. The Case Manager will then build an Individual Employment
Plan (IEP) in agreement with you. This will include personally tailored skills training, development, support and employment programmes.
