Course programme
Mode of delivery: Part time, work based learning (you must be employed full-time in the field of audiology at the start of this course and for the duration of it)
Duration: 19 days of on-campus teaching and assessment across 15 months

Accreditation of previous learning experience (APEL):
Applicants who
hold a relevant academic qualification in Audiology such as BSc Hons Hearing Sciences or other interim award from a BSc Hons Audiology programme will be considered for entry to the second stage of the programme. This will also require an assessment of clinical competence which will be arranged by the University.

Entry requirements:
- You must be employed full-time in the field of audiology and a letter of support from your employer must be included with the application.

- GCSE Mathematics, English Language and Science Grade C/4 or higher desirable

If candidates do not have standard qualifications they will be considered on an individual basis. Such students will be required to complete a Mathematics and/or English Language assessment at Aston once their application has been received.

Earn while you learn – studying to become a hearing aid dispenser with Aston University and Scrivens Hearing Care.
In the first stage, you are introduced to a range of basic sciences related to hearing and audiology. You will also focus on clinical procedures and the skills needed to manage patients. You will put these skills into practice in your workplace.
In your second stage you will build on the skills developed in the first stage. You will be introduced to topics such as hearing aids and counselling skills. You will also be developing related clinical competencies as you work with patients/clients in the workplace.
Stage 1
- Adult Auditory Assessment - provides students with a theoretical and practical understanding of audiological test procedures and related clinical issues in adult auditory assessment
- Rehabilitation in Audiology - develops an understanding of the rehabilitative process
- Introduction to Auditory Sciences - provides students with a sound theoretical understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the auditory and vestibular systems
- Skills Foundation I - develops skills in audiological assessment procedures, following British Society of Audiology (BSA) and British Academy of Audiology (BAA) recommendations
- Practical Placement I - provides students with an opportunity to learn about audiology practice
Stage 2
- Auditory Sciences II - This module provides an introduction to psychophysical methods and the psychophysics of hearing and introduces students to the perceptual effects of deafness. The module will introduce models of pitch perception and frequency selectivity. Students will also learn about the perception of loudness, masking, temporal processing, and the perceptual effects of binaural stimulation gain an overview of speech production and perception
- Hearing Aids – this module provides an understanding of routine hearing aids systems, and how to select and fit them and verify, evaluate and modify their performance
- Improving Healthcare – this module provides an awareness of patient perspectives and an understanding of how to improve services
- Skills Foundation II - this practical-based module aims to develop skills in audiological assessment and rehabilitative procedures, following BSA/BAA recommended procedures
- Practice placement II - provides supervised training in practise to complete the Individual Record of Clinical Practice and continue to build a portfolio of evidence
- Professional Studies – Business Practice – this covers the legal knowledge and business skills required to dispense hearing aids in the private sector as an independent or employed dispenser.
