American-born James lived most of his adult life in England. He explored the clash between his two countries in a variety of ways, while experimenting with the point of view from which he told his stories. We shall examine five works that trace his technical development and depict his characteristic theme of a clash of cultures:
• Washington Square
• The Portrait of a Lady
• The Bostonians
• What Maisie Knew
• The Ambassadors
With Carole Brown. Carole was Professor of English Literature at Hamline University, Minnesota, where she specialised in the English novel. She has published work on Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf.
