MA in Heritage Education
Mode: part-time

MA in Heritage Education is an innovative, exciting and challenging subject that looks at Heritage Education from a range of contemporary perspectives. You will critically debate Heritage Education policy and practice to get beneath the skin of the ever-changing face of the current Heritage scene.

The five core modules will fit you with the knowledge understanding and skills to become a full fledged Heritage Education professional or to develop your interests in heritage and heritage education at a higher level. Dynamic, research-informed teaching is delivered by enthusiastic, knowledgeable and experienced tutors. We use a wide range of teaching styles, including lectures, interactive seminars, workshops and tutorials.

The timetable comprises 5 taught weekends (Friday-Saturday, normally 09.30-16.30, October, November, January, March and May) at which these five core modules are delivered. In addition you will have group and individual tutorials to help you complete your assignments throughout the year.

Various forms of site- or case studies, or placements, are a key element of this programme. These can be formal or more informal arrangement s. We believe that you can't study Heritage out of context and so we make sure that you have plenty of time in all kinds of heritage settings from natural heritage centres to local and national architectural gems. We give you the opportunity to choose the kinds of site studies and placements that suit your academic and professional needs best.

Your assessments will involve being placed at or studying a heritage site to develop a unique resource to support teaching and learning in situ. In addition you can choose a block placement in a castle, stately home, museum or reminiscence centre. You can choose your site or placement locations from local, national and international sites in Lincoln, London, Norway and America.

Assessment
Our range of MA assignments from portfolios at impact reports are designed to help you demonstrate the practical skills you have developed in the field as well as your ability to evaluate and review your own practice. We give you detailed feedback throughout on how you are doing and set you targets to improve your work. By the end of the year there are even opportunities for you to get your dissertation research work published if you wish to!

Your dissertation will give you the opportunity to undertake a significant piece of action research in the field and establish your reputation as a serious reflective practitioner.

You can explore subjects like:

  • The success of interactive exhibits in national museums;
  • The development of virtual collections to support understanding of collections;
  • Measuring the effect of re-enactors on children's understanding at Heritage sites;
  • How families respond to bespoke programme at natural heritage sites.
