To develop a strong theoretical knowledge of the past alongside the practical and professional skills needed to pursue a career in the Heritage sector. Students will learn about the history of landscape, art, architecture, design and furniture. Students will also learn how to interpret manage and communicate this shared inheritance through archaeological digs, museum exhibitions and live re-enactment events. Suitable for everyone with a passion for the past and anyone who want to learn how to understand and communicate it.

* a range of GCSEs
* the equivalent of two A-levels/A2s, one of which should be at least a C (80 points) in History or a related subject, and the other at least a D (60 points);
* an Access to HE Certificate or Diploma with a suitable Heritage Studies or humanities related content;
* alternative qualifications;

BA (Hons) Heritage Studies

Heritage Studies is an innovative, exciting and challenging subject that looks at Heritage from, cultural, social and political perspectives. You will critically debate Heritage policy and practice to get beneath the skin of the ever-changing face of the contemporary Heritage scene.

We offer a wide range of modules that fit you with the knowledge understanding and skills to become a full fledged Heritage professional. Apart from work placements, a typical week usually involves three days on campus. Dynamic, research-informed teaching is delivered by enthusiastic, knowledgeable and experienced tutors. We use a wide range of teaching styles, including lectures, interactive seminars, workshops and tutorials.

Placements

Placements are a key element of this programme. We believe that you can't study Heritage out of context and so we make sure that you have plenty of time in all kinds of heritage settings from natural heritage centres to local and national architectural gems. We give you the opportunity to choose the kind of placement that suits your academic and professional needs best.

  • You can choose from placements in castles, stately homes, museums or reminiscence centres.
  • You can choose your task from conserving an ancient pot to developing an educational trail or putting on a local history display.
  • You can choose your placement location from local, national and international sites in Lincoln, London, Norway and America.

In the third year you complete a research study on any aspect of Heritage Studies that interests you.

Assessment
Your first year is important. We know that you will need time to settle in to University and build up your academic skills and so, although you have to pass all of your first year modules to progress to the second year, your first year work doesn't count towards your degree. Instead, we give you detailed feedback on how you are doing and set you targets to improve your work. We use a wide range of different types of assessment throughout the degree including coursework portfolios, group discussions, multi-media technology presentations and individual projects as well as essays and exams. And by the end of the third year there are even opportunities for you to get your dissertation research work published if you wish to!

Entry Requirements

In addition all students will need a successful Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau and to register with the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). This is arranged by the University College.

Students will be legally required to register with the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) which is administered by the ISA. The ISA has recently been established as a single agency to monitor all individuals who want to work or volunteer with vulnerable people. Following successful registration you will be issued with an ISA Registration Number which will stay with you for the rest of your career. We will send you further instructions on registering with the VBS as part of the admissions process.
