Course programme
ELA offers an SQA approved ESOL course leading to the Scottish Higher ESOL qualification.
This qualification is issued by the Scottish Qualifications Authority, and is accepted all over Scotland and the UK as evidence of English ability for people who want to go to university or college to study, or to find work in the UK. In order to offer this course, Edinburgh Language Academy must employ qualified and experienced English teachers to teach the lessons and assess students' skills.
Course Overview
The course lasts 160 hours. It is split into two modules – an 80 hour compulsory unit of English for Everyday Communication, and a 40 hour option module of either English for Study purposes or English for Work-related Contexts. The choice of option module will be agreed with the students as they progress through the course. An extra 40 hours is reserved for personalised learning.
At the beginning of the course, an individual learning plan (ILP) will be agreed with each student. This plan will help the students to understand what they need to learn in order to pass the exam, and will help the teacher to plan suitable lessons.
The qualification is modular - if a student doesn't sit the exam, the SQA can still give a unit award. This means that you do not have to complete the course in one year.
