You will arrive with an A-level (or equivalent) in one of the two languages but the second language can be taken at either beginners or advanced level. You can spend your year abroad either in one country for the whole year, or you can split your time between a German-speaking country and a Spanish-speaking country.

About this course
Hispanic Studies and German is a joint degree that allows you to gain expertise in two languages and cultures by devoting equal weight to each. Each year you take four modules: one in each of your chosen languages, and one module on a cultural topic from each language department. Core modules that focus on aspects of Hispanic and German culture, society, literature, film and history in your first year feed into a range of themed options in the following years.
Our graduates work for organisations including: United Nations, the Ministry of Defence, British Airways, BBC Sussex, Nestle.
Examples of our graduates’ job roles include: Lead European marketer, Freelance translator & Editor, German Language Teacher, Project Controller, European Graduate trainee, Events Assistant.
A level: AAB, to include A level in Spanish or German
IB: 36 points, to include 5 at IB Higher Level in Spanish or German

We employ a variety of teaching approaches, including lectures, seminars (in which the emphasis is on student participation) and written and spoken language classes. You will spend the rest of your time studying independently, preparing for classes, reading or watching primary texts, engaging with secondary sources, writing essays and working on your language skills.
How will I be assessed?
We will track your progress through a variety of methods, including language assignments, essays, presentations, portfolio submissions and examinations (written and oral). Throughout your course you will receive detailed, personalised feedback to help you to improve your skills.
