HISTORY A/AS Level
History is a popular, important and relevant subject. Top universities and employers value this subject as excellent training in analysis, evaluation, organisation and communication. In addition, the subject provides a critical insight into the contemporary world. The subject is very popular and provokes lots of debates. For example, this year students re-staged the trial of Charles I. In addition there is a foreign visit; in the last few years History students have been to Krakow, Ypres and Berlin.
What Will I Learn? The course is made up of four modules of British and European History. In the first year we study Germany in the critical period between 1933 and 1963. The first year also introduces students to Britain in the 17th Century focussing on the causes of the English Civil War which started in 1642. The Second year carries on this theme by analysing debates about Oliver Cromwell's place in British History. Finally there is a module of Russian History looking at the period from 1855-1964.
How Will I Be Assessed? The first year modules are assessed by examination. In the second year, the Cromwell module is coursework based.
