Description of Major
Majors in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish introduce the student to the language, literature and culture of the subject area. A second language may be elected to fulfill the departmental minor requirements. Other languages offered within the department include, Arabic, Hebrew, and Portuguese. Linguistics courses are also available. Students may also choose a concentration in Business. These options are designed to provide more flexibility and increase employment opportunities. We offer innovative hybrid courses and courses with online support. The free computer and audio-visual lab offers extensive hours of operation for at-your-convenience individual study.

Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish:
XXX XXXX (6-12). Must demonstrate proficiency in the major language by testing or course completion at the intermediate level. At FSU the intermediate level is X220.

Requirements for graduation in the College of Arts and Sciences include:
The College of Arts and Science requires proficiency in a foreign language through the intermediate (2220 or equivalent) level or sign language through the advanced (2614 or equivalent) level.

Requirements for Progression to the Upper-Division Major
Students must complete at least 52 hours of credit with a minimum grade point average of 2.00, at least half the required General Education hours, including English composition and mathematics, or an A.A. Degree.

Major Programs of Studies at FSU

Major in one foreign language: (30 hours)
The program requirements in the chosen language will include 30 hours of coursework at the 3000 level or higher (some languages may begin above 2220). Requirements may include coursework in literature, grammar, composition, and language skills. A grade of C minus or higher must be earned in each course applied toward any major or minor in Modern Languages. This option requires a minimum of 12-15 hours in an approved minor area. Coursework taken to satisfy the Arts and Sciences foreign language requirement may not be applied toward the major or minor. See advisor and for details.

Co-major Programs: (42 to 48 hours)
None of the following require a minor.

Co-major in Modern Languages and Linguistics: (42 hours)
The department offers French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish in combination with each other.

Co-majors require 21 hours in each discipline numbered above 1999. No minor is required. One second year language course must be used to satisfy the College of Arts and Sciences language requirement and cannot be applied to the co-major.

Co-major in Chinese and Japanese: (42 hours)
A co-major is offered in Chinese and Japanese, requiring 15 hours of both Chinese and Japanese language above the 2220-level, and 12 hours in Chinese and/or Japanese literature and culture. Of the combined 30 hours of Chinese and Japanese language courses, at least 3 hours must be taken at the 4000-level in one language and 6 hours taken at the 4000-level in the other. No minor is required.

Language with a Concentration in Business: (45-48 hours)
The Concentration in Business requires a minimum of 21 hours of language above the 2220 level in French, German, Italian, Russian, or Spanish; 18 hours of language above the 2220 level are required in Chinese or Japanese. The student must also complete 27 hours in designated business courses. No minor is required.

Minor Requirements
Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish majors are required to complete 12-15 hours in an approved minor (more if required by minor department). Grades of C minus or higher required.

Co-majors in Modern Language and Linguistics and Chinese/Japanese, and Language with a Concentration in Business majors are not required to complete a minor.

Computer Skills Competency: (3 hours)
CGS 2060 (3) Computer Fluency, CGS 2100 (3) Microcomputer Applications for Business/Economics, or ISC 3313 (3) Introduction to Scientific Computing will fulfill this requirement for the major.

Oral Communication Competency: (0-3 hours)
Students must demonstrate the ability to orally transmit ideas and information clearly. This requirement may be met with an approved college-level course.
