If you want to develop your historical understanding of the modern world order, take part in debates about politics and society or want to work teaching, public/private sector or non-governmental organisations, this course could be for you.
Our Modern and International History degree has been developed in response to an increased interest in international events - from the post-Cold War transformation of the world, to conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, to the economic, political and social impacts of globalisation.
You'll join the current intellectual and academic debates in modern and international history and you'll explore the most important issues affecting politics and society today. These include an historical understanding of the modern world order.
You'll develop research skills and learn about modern British, European and world history in your first core modules. You'll then establish a framework from 1648 to understand the development of nation states and relations between them. In your dissertation, you'll get to investigate a topic of interest in depth and draw on a range of analytical perspectives, including international relations.

History of Political Thought introduces you to some of the important political thinkers and some of the major political ideologies of the modern era. It covers a period of several centuries until the late 19th century.
Consumer Society and the Industrial Revolution: Consumer society brought coffee-houses, clubs and societies, pleasure gardens, and the middle-class cultivation of science, art and literature. And yet consumer products like sugar and chocolate could come from slave plantations in the Empire, while new factories for mass produced consumer goods drew extensively on the use of child labour. This module asks, what kind of class society had been created in this consumer and industrial revolution?
The USA and the World: 1941-Present examines the foreign policy of the USA since it entered the Second World War. It focuses on the Cold War, the period after the collapse of Soviet and Eastern European communism, and the response to the attacks on 11 September 2001.

International Society: From Westphalia to the Present considers how states became the dominant form of political organisation; how a society of states based on rules, norms and law evolved; how the system became globalised; and the extent to which the state is currently being challenged by processes of globalisation.
