    8 Weeks

As a region, our coastline has had a remarkable past stretching way before the Viking invaders who breached the security of Lindisfarne. We will work slowly down the coast looking at the history of its towns, villages and coastal resorts. We will examine the architecture and purpose of its buildings and the legacy that has been left behind. We will look at its people through their life journey and decide what made them famous. We will explore the region in a variety of ways from the ordinary to the extraordinary. We will study events by researching documentary evidence and examine old photographs to assess if they gave a ‘true reflection’ of historic Northumbria. The course has been designed to enhance learners’ knowledge of local and public history, records and where to look for them. There will be small group discussions, interactive activities, presentations and exploration of photographic evidence

About this course

This course is designed for those learners with an enquiring mind and an interest in local history who want to develop this interest further. History is not just a means of reciting dates and events but the aim of the course is to ‘peel back the layers of time’ and see what fascinating stories lie beneath.

This course is for learners who either have some understanding of the region’s history and who are keen to develop that knowledge further. Also for those learners who have some knowledge of how documentary evidence is sourced, evaluated and examined
