HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering Overview

Electrical and electronic engineering are closely related areas that serve an important role in our everyday lives and in the function of engineering businesses - without electronics there would be no computers, electric motors or AC power.

This course will develop your working knowledge of how electricity is generated, transmitted and used to process and store information, the operation and control of common induction motors and generators, and important business principles that a manufacturing company requires in the engineering industry.

If you are undertaking further professional development, or wish to pursue a career in electrical engineering, then this course will suit your needs.

This course is validated by Edexcel.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss qualifications, experience and other related issues.

In order to start this course, you will be expected to have successfully completed, or have evidence of working towards, at least one of the following:

  • At least 160 UCAS points at A Level in appropriate subjects
  • NVQ Level 3 in a related electrical engineering discipline
  • Appropriate BTEC National Diploma with MM profile or Extended Diploma withMMP profile or above
  • Other relevant Level 3 qualification (normally at merit grade) – if you are unsure contact the college to see if we accept your qualification
  • Alternatively, we will consider substantive experience in a relevant field

We also normally require GCSE English and maths at grade C or above: literacy and numeracy at Level 2 are essential requirements.

Please note that maths at Level 2 is required for progression onto full degree courses, should you choose to continue your education beyond a HND course.

Start dates and fees

Course fees are payable for each year of all university-level courses. To identify your course fees and the financial support available to you, please see the HE section of the website or contact a member of the HE team at the college.

Provisional timetables will be discussed at interview, and confirmed in the final joining instructions which all students will receive in July.

The table below shows you when the course starts. You may be charged a fee for your course depending on your age and circumstances.

Typically the HNC takes two years, however units achieved previously can be considered as accredited prior learning if suitable.

Students will attend for one day per week - you will also need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to research and work outside the classroom.

Location
  • Engineering Innovation Centre
How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods are varied and may include written reports, presentations, case studies, individual/group projects and reflective statements. Where units are work-related, assessment will relate to your own organisation (where appropriate) and/or vocational setting. For mathematical subjects there may be time based assessments in the classroom.

What does the course lead to?

This course will provide you with knowledge, understanding and professional skills you can take into your career or current role. You can expect to move on in your vocational field into senior level roles upon completion.

What will I study?

HNC units:

  • Analytical Methods for Engineers
  • Engineering Science
  • Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation
  • Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Digital & Analogue Devices and Circuits
  • Electrical Power
  • Utilisation of Electrical Energy
  • Combinational and Sequential Logic
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles (required if you want to top-up to HND)
  • Engineering Design

Module titles may change.

What can I go on to study?

Upon successful completion of this programme, you have the opportunity to complete our one-year HND Electrical and Electronic Engineering (top-up) programme.

Engineering students may wish to apply for membership of professional institutes or bodies such as the IET after completing their programme.

How do I apply?

Please complete our online application form, paying particular attention to previous qualifications and the personal statement. If you experience any difficulty, please contact the HE team on 01623 627191 ext 8092, or email us at heteam@wnc.ac.uk
