The sport and exercise industry is a dynamic and fast growing industry within the UK with a vast amount of local and national employment opportunities available. This programme has been designed to provide learners with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills underpinning a range of sport science disciplines (such as training and fitness; sports physiology and psychology; coaching and sports performance), whilst also developing your research, personal and professional skills.

The HNC course focuses on specific core modules and optional units that utilise both the college facilities and external partnerships to help create a unique package that covers a wide range of sport and exercise career pathways.

Entry requirements For 2017 entry onwards: applicants require a minimum of 48 UCAS points from a minimum of 2 A Levels (with one in a related subject) or level 3 equivalent or an Access to HE Diploma. Students are also required to hold English & Maths GCSE (or equivalent) grade C or above. Students with no traditional entry qualifications will be considered on an individual basis and will undertake a written and practical skills assessment. All students irrespective of entry route will be interviewed. What you will learn Year 1 Subject areas include: Anatomy and physiology Exercise psychology Nutrition Training and performance Sports coaching What Next On completion of the HNC, learners will have the opportunity to progress onto the HND. It could also enhance opportunities in pursuing careers in the sports industry, exercise, health or fitness, as well as possible more specialised routes in health promotion, coaching, sports therapy and sports teaching/lecturing. Programme Benefits Upon successful completion of this HNC, graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to pursue a new career, or advance an existing one in sports coaching or the wider field of sport and exercise sciences. Graduate may pursue careers in the sports industry, exercise, health or fitness, as well as possible more specialised routes in health promotion, coaching, sports therapy and sports teaching/lecturing. Opportunities also exist to progress onto a HND Sport and Exercise Sciences for those who wish to pursue further study in the subject area. Learning & Teaching Methods Methods of learning and teaching are designed to support students in becoming active members of a learning community. Students will be expected to work together in an informal environment as well as in formal classes where a culture of dignity, courtesy and mutual respect with staff and their peers is essential. A variety of methods will be used such as lectures, seminars and practical sessions. Integrating a work-based or placement opportunity, students will be visited in the workplace by a member of Institute staff to ensure a positive partnership between the employer mentor and to monitor that learning in the workplace is effective. Workplace learning is designed to support the development of an employable graduate equipped with the attributes, skills and knowledge to progress within a global market.
