Talented visual effects artists are highly sought after in the UK.
This is because there is a shortage of trained and skilled home-grown talent, so much of the work is being farmed out to overseas companies.
This course is designed to prepare students for the exciting and challenging world of the visual effects industry, where you will come away with a ‘VFX toolkit’ of skills under your belt, as well as a strong grounding in video production.
About this course
This course is for students looking to pursue a career in the Visual Effects Industry.
Depending on numbers, there will be an option for progression on to a HND at the college. This Visual Effects and Digital Film Production course prepares students for a career in the industry. On completetion of a HND students wishing to continue in education can enrol on an appropriate BA Honours Degree or Level 6 course.

A portfolio or showreel demonstrating relevant skills to the course – don’t worry if you haven’t got any visual effects work, we’d like to see your videos, photography, graphics, sketches – anything that shows your creativity!
Four GCSEs at grade 4 minimum (formerly C), to include Maths and English, or an equivalent qualification, plus
•Two A Levels or equivalent Level 3 qualification e.g. BTEC National Diploma, or
Subject related Level 3 Advanced Diploma is considered with other qualfications, or
An Access to Higher Education Diploma

Course programme
The course focuses on compositing, animation techniques, 3D modelling, motion graphics, camera tracking and matchmoving and will cover theoretical aspects including the history of visual effects in the film and television industries.
It is taught by practicing Visual Effects artists so students will receive the high-quality, relevant knowledge and expertise that can be readily applied in the workplace.
Year 1 (Level 4)
- Film and Video Techniques (applies to most of the practical units)
- The History of VFX (Theory and Contextual Studies)
- Designing and Creating Idents (Motion Graphics, 3D etc.)
- Set Extension Project (Matte Painting, 3D environments, compositing etc.)
- Work Placement
- Film Trailer (Teaser and Theatrical)
Year 2 (Level 5)
- VFX Music Video Production
- Genre Film Production (Sci-fi, horror, fantasy etc.)
- Animation and Live Action Film Project (‘hand-drawn’ animation composited with video)
- Title Sequence

- Final Major Project (to be decided in consultation with your tutors)
