The construction and built environment industry is the UK’s largest industry, employing circa 2.35 million people and accounting for typically 8% of UK GDP. This HND course is designed to provide you with sound technical understanding of a range of Architectural Design principles. You will gain knowledge of and apply design theories, develop practical skills and understand current legislation, which will allow to solve real world problems.

Studying this course will equip you with a technical understanding of the fundamentals of construction technology, environmental and sustainable issues, modern methods of construction and construction project management. In addition you will develop practical skills in implementing emerging design techniques such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) to support your projects.

This highly vocational qualification will provide you with the knowledge required to take up a position in the construction industry and will also provide a progression route onto professionally accredited courses within the Department including the BSc (Hons) Architectural Design Technology

About this course

On successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of Design Procedures, Technology, Procurement and Contracts and Professional Practice.
Apply design concepts and understand the ways that needs analysis, marketing, aesthetics, development and preparation of a design brief/specification lead to an appropriate solution and drawing preparation.
Critically evaluate novel problems, interpret and synthesise technological data and apply this knowledge in the development of creative, innovative and inclusive architectural solutions.
Develop design schemes using appropriate methods and materials and effectively communicate design and technology information through a range of techniques including the use of ICT.
Demonstrate an awareness of management of the design environment including project management, time / cost factors and ethical and legal responsibilities.
Demonstrate a range of key skills required in practice namely communication, numeracy, IT, working with others, improving own learning and performance, and problem solving.
Knowledge of building and construction and the ability to use construction/design software.
A range of transferable skills including critical thinking skills, verbal communication and analytical thinking.

On this course you will take part in a wide range of lectures, tutorials, design studios and practical workshops. All of these will equip you with the skills and knowledge to take up a future role as an Architectural Technologist. Our structured curriculum develops your knowledge and skills as you work through each year of the course. In the first year you will be introduced to some of the fundamental skills including architectural detailing in our dedicated studio, physical model making based in the workshops and using software tools to design and communicate your projects. The second year will provide more opportunities to develop a range of design projects whilst learning more around materials, sustainable design, advanced detailing techniques and construction methods.
