About this course

This course is aimed at mature students who are enthusiastic about learning and want to prepare for study at university. It would suit students who may have missed out at school, but wish to renew their studies. To begin this course you will need to pass a Literacy and Numeracy test, an interview and complete a Science assignment.

ACCESS TO SCIENCE

Level 3
Location: Hall Green Campus
Times: Day FT
Duration: 1 year

What will I study?
The course is delivered through a combination of practical experiments and lectures. All students study core subjects (Maths/Numeracy, English/study skills) as well as the modules specific to the subject area. You will accumulate credits at Level 2 (GCSE equivalent) or Level 3 (A Level equivalent). You will need to have achieved at least 36 credits at Level 3 for university entrance, although many universities will ask for more than this minimum.

Students choose one of two pathways in this Access course:

EITHER: 1. Physical Science
During this course you will study Biology, Physics and Chemistry. You will study the following topics:
Electricity, waves, forces & motion, conservation of energy, atomic structure, chemical bonding, organic chemistry, the Periodic Table, cells & microscopes, anatomy, molecules of life enzymes.

OR: 2. Life Science
During this course you will study Biology, Psychology and Chemistry.
You will study the following topics:
Cognitive psychology, addiction, evolutionary explanations of human behaviour, atomic structure, chemical bonding, organic chemistry, the periodic table, cells & microscopes, anatomy and molecules of life enzymes.

What can I do after this course?
On successful completion of this course you could progress onto a range of Higher Education Degrees including Biomedical Sciences, Engineering, Forensics, Biological Sciences, Psychological Sciences, and Physiology.
