About this course

Two Highers (or equivalent) in any subject, plus three Standard Grade passes. Significant relevant practical experience will also be considered.

Course Aims:
As business becomes increasingly dependant on e-commerce, networking skills are in high demand. This course provides you with the high-level technical skills, including Cisco qualifications, required for today's networking environment. On completion, you may progress to the Napier University Network Computing degree delivered here at James Watt College.

Course Content:
Building Local Area Networks. Hardware Installation & Maintenance. Computer Operating Systems. Network Technology & Communications. Supporting Users & Troubleshooting a Desktop Operating System. Supporting Users & Troubleshooting Desktop Applications. Client Operating Systems. Network Server Operating System. Relational Databases Systems Using Oracle.

Progression Opportunities:
Successful students have the opportunity to progress to the BSc Network Computing (Napier University) which is delivered at James Watt College. There are a number of agreements with other Scottish universities that allow students to obtain a degree with one further year of study.

Career Potential:
It is expected that successful students will be capable of working as an IT support specialist or as a network systems administrator.

Course Assessment:
Continuous assessment is employed throughout the course. Most subjects will have a combination of observation-based practical assessments, class-based and project-based assessments.
