You will be assessed through written assignments, six week training/coaching programmes, individual projects, individual/group presentations and time constrained assessments. Your course leader will regularly arrange one to one personal progression tutorials and set agreed study targets. Alongside your assessments you will be required to produce a Personal Development Plan. What can I do next On completion of this course, you could progress onto the final year of a BA or BSC programme to convert your HND into a full honours degree. Previous students have moved on to local universities such as University of Gloucestershire, University of Worcester and Newman University.Alternatively you could choose a range of career paths including; Fitness Instructor, Sports Teacher, Sports Coach, Personal Trainer, Sports Centre Manager, Sports Development Officer, sport initiative programme coaching in the voluntary, public and private sector and charity trust sport campaigners.

Applied Sports Coaching

This unit will give learners the chance to go through the full coaching process starting with the initial assessment of an athlete’s ability and ending with a player consultation at the end of the training programme. Practical sessions are required in this unit.



The Evolution of Sport Development

The unit starts with a historical view of sports development and gives an insight into the principles and concepts which have influenced its growth. It also highlights the growing influence of government in sports development.



The Sport and Leisure Industry

This unit gives learners an understanding of the sport and leisure industry, the environment in which it operates and its range, growth and development.

Course overview You want to work in Sport, but not sure what area? This diverse course opens a number of doors for you in the sport industry and/or provides a natural progression onto the third year for a number of sport or sport & exercise science degree courses. This course will broaden your knowledge and apply practical skills in a realistic working environment in a number of areas in this industry. The HND Sport at HoW College allows you to gain work experience within the course and earn whilst you learn due to the course structure and content. We understand what employers look for in the Sport industry and we have tailored the course to ensure you tick all the boxes they require. The HND Sport is delivered out of our Redditch/Bromsgrove campus that provides state of the art facilities for sport students, including a new full size sports hall, a fitness suite, sports therapy clinic and a sport laboratory. The lecturers delivering the course are highly qualified with industry experience, and provide expert knowledge in their specific area. The course provides a number of exciting excursions including national stadiums, universities and live sporting events. The full time course runs for three days a week for the first year, and then two days a week in the second year, allowing the students to earn whilst they learn. The course is delivered through seminars, lectures and practical’s, representing a theory to practical model, with the opportunity to apply new skills in work experience completed in the sport industry. The course covers a number of units, predominantly in the area of sport coaching and development; however the course also covers areas such as Performance Analysis and PE, opening further career paths. Studying in a smaller cohort of students ensures that academic learning is supported by a personal tutor from the academic staff team. Subject specific learning advisers supplement the library and information technology facilities at the college. In addition to the subjects named above the course ensures students gain valuable experience in their chosen area of sport, with a unit integrating Professional Development, Employability Skills and Work-based Experience, allowing students to complete 40 hours of work experience in the sport industry. The flexibility and the variety of areas covered ensure that on completion of the course you have an array of knowledge that will equip you for a variety of University courses and/or jobs in sport. Mature applicants with other qualifications or non-formal qualifications are welcome to apply and will be assessed on an individual basis and may be asked to complete a short task to demonstrate the required level of knowledge to meet the demands of the course. All applicants will be asked to attend a formal interview to assess suitability and commitment to the programme of study.
