Who is this course for? This course is ideal for people who wish to pursue a career or interest within the expanding field of Holistic and Complementary Therapies. Individuals undertaking this programme will find it challenging and rewarding. The two year programme gives you all the skills you need to be a successful Holistic Therapist. Applications from mature candidates are particularly welcomed.

Previous knowledge required: Prospective candidates must: Be 16 years of age or over on entry to the course. Have a commitment to working with the general public. Be successful at college interview and meet the necessary entrance requirements.

What will I study? Body Massage Zone Therapy Reflexology Aromatherapy Holistic Facial Massage Indian Head Massage Anatomy and Physiology Remedial Massage Customer Service and Reception Skills In addition students will have the opportunity to work towards: Key Skills Awards OCN Credit in College Induction, Career Education, Work Experience and Introduction to Enterprise GCSE Maths and English (if required) Other specialist units or awards There is a option for continuation in order to gain further therapy qualifications including the following: Spa Therapies Remedial Massage including Heat Treatment Treatment and Management of Sports Injuries VTCT Indian Head Massage Diploma Advanced Aromatherapy and Reflexology Body Electrical Treatment

What else will I do? During your time studying these qualifications you will be working commercially in well-equipped salons on members of the public and you will treat clients on a regular basis. Salon management skills are taught alongside formal training in practical skills. While you are studying for your qualification here at Coleg Powys, you will have the opportunity to attend additional seminars and workshops often with well known outside speakers within the industry.

How will I be assessed? You will be assessed by practical observations of the new skills you have learnt and also be required to produce written work in the form of assignments and case studies. You will also be asked to sit written tests to show your understanding of the subjects.

What will I achieve? You will achieve in your first year Body Massage, Massage with Pre Blended Oils (Aromatherapy) Zone Therapy (Reflexology) Holistic Facial Massage and Anatomy and Physiology. You will be introduced to different Holistic concepts and leave competent in your skills. In the second year of the course you will complete the full Holistic Therapies Diploma including Aromatherapy in which you will blend essential oils, provide aromatherapy treatments and make products. Reflexology will build on the skills developed in the first year in Indian Head massage and will focus on Ayurvedic concepts and Remedial massage in which you will learn deep tissue techniques to treat injuries. In the second year of your course, you will also have the option to study specialist Spa Techniques.

What can I do afterwards? The Spa and Holistic industry is one of the fastest growing in the world. You will have opportunities to work in Spas as either a Spa or Holistic Therapist. Opportunities are also available on cruise liners, health clubs, local salons and hospices. There are many avenues in which you can apply your skills. You may also want to use your new skills to develop your own Holistic or Spa business either opening your own treatment room or being a mobile therapist. You many also want to go on to study at a higher level, for example a Degree in Spa Management or a Complementary Therapies Degree.
