Our Level Two Diploma in Horse Care provides good grounding in the key aspects of horse care and riding. As well as practical activities with horses you will develop your academic skills through learning more about horses and how they work.

Students who have completed this course have found it helpful for successfully working with horses or going on to study at Level Three.

One reason for this success is that you are provided with a broad base of experience from studying a combination of equine, business and science units. This means you will leave Warwickshire College with good knowledge and skills and well prepared to start your career with horses.

Wherever your journey through the equine world takes you, you can begin to shape your future with a Level Two qualification from Warwickshire College.

Undertake Horse Handling

This unit focuses on developing and improving learner ability to handle horses. This covers both the practical and theoretical aspects of why we handle horses. The unit begins with learners investigating the methods and equipment used to handle and restrain horses in specific situations. Learners will then be able to demonstrate the skills they have developed in a number of different situations.

Understand the Principles of Horse Biology

This unit focuses on providing learners with the knowledge and understanding of how a horse works. The learner is introduced to basic structure of the horse as an animal, to gain knowledge, and to appreciate the function of the skeleton, muscles and systems in animals. The systems covered include the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive and excretory systems.

Landbased Business

Understanding how business and organisations fit into the Equine Industry.  Learners will look at current trends, issues and employment.


Undertake Stable & Yard Management

This unit covers the knowledge and skills required to maintain a stable and yard and care for horses safely, efficieintly and effectively.


Fit and Maintain Horse Tack and Clothing

In this unit will have an apportunity to develop the knowledge and skills required in order to adopt safe working practices and develop a confident and adaptable approach to horses.  Practical competence is necessary and you will develop understanding and caring for the wellbeing of the horse.  This unit covers the tack, equipment and horse clothing commonly used in stable yards.

Riding on the Flat.

Learners will develop skills in working horses on the flat and using training exercises to improve flatwork.  You will develop to ride a variety of horses on the flat to maintain and improve their way of going to acceptable industry standards.  You will be able to assess a horse's strengths and weaknesses, select and use suitable exercises and assess their effectiveness.  Assess a horse's level of training and plan exercises for improvement. 


Undertake Work Related Experience in the Land-based Industries

Learners on vocational courses should have experience of the type of work that they hope to do and an idea of the expectations of those who may employ them.

Carry Out and Understand the Principles of Feeding and Watering Horses

Basic husbandry, including feeding, housing and looking after horses, is a vital part of caring for them. This unit introduces learners to the feeding and watering of horses. Learners will be able to feed and water horses in a practical situation. They will also cover the basics of ration formulation and the factors to consider when preparing individual diets for horses.

BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is continuous involving practical tasks, industrial experience, assignments and written tests.

What is the entry process?

After applying, you will be invited to an informal interview with a member of the department. They will assess your suitability and answer any questions you have about the course.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Level 1

Academic: Four GCSEs at Grade D or above including English, Science and Maths,

Equine: Relevant practical horse handling experience and the ability to show enthusiasm for the subject.  Basic level of riding experience, must be balanced in walk, trot and canter.

It is essential that students have an up-to-date tetanus vaccination.

For students aged 16-18 years, the fee is £0.00 for the 2015-16 academic year

Students aged 19 + years will be required to pay a total fee of £1,287 for the 2015-16 academic year

I’ve never been to Moreton Morrell, what is it like?

Covering 750 acres of beautiful Warwickshire countryside, our Moreton Morrell centre has excellent facilities to support our students in their studies. 

Specialist resources include a well-equipped Horse Unit with stabling for over 100 horses, a sports performance laboratory, three large schools and a purpose built farriery teaching unit. Our highly acclaimed blacksmithing courses take place on the lower campus where we also have a full working farm allowing students to get hands-on experience with farm animals and agricultural machinery. For those studying countryside courses our woodlands, wetlands and grasslands ensure students experience real-life wildlife habitats.

Is accommodation available?

Our Moreton Morrell centre has accommodation for over 250 residential students. Our excellent facilities include refectories which serve a good range of food, a bistro where hot drinks and snacks can be purchased and a shop selling household and personal items.

Wardens and on-site nurse are available to provide assistance should any problems arise. The residential team organise a packed programme of events and trips to ensure students are given the opportunity to have plenty of fun outside of the classroom.

Is there any help available to pay for my course?

If you are aged 16-18, tuition for full time, further education courses is generally free but you may be asked to contribute towards the cost of books, specialist equipment and trips.

Students who are aged 19+ are normally expected to pay towards the cost of tuition but loans and bursaries may be available to you. Depending on personal circumstances, older students who are in receipt of certain benefits may be eligible for free or reduced tuition.

How do you support your students?

In addition to lectures from subject specialists, tutorial support is available to students from a dedicated Personal Learning Advisor (PLA). A PLA works alongside tutors to help students progress and develop as an individual on their course. This includes holding regular one to one sessions with students to ensure they are kept on track with their studies and achieving their full potential.

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

What can I do after this course?

You may find employment as a stud or stable assistant or trainee groom.

You may progress to Level 3 Diploma courses.
