Course programme

Summary

This course is a personalised programme with a focus on preparation for the future beyond college, specialising in horticulture. The aim of the course is to move students out of the classroom environment and give them a practical education, focused on their transition away from the college environment and into the world of work. This may be on a part-time or supported basis. It is specifically for individuals who have maybe spent a year or more in Supported Learning and are now ready to progress forward into the world of work, or have possibly come back into the college environment after a time of absence. Over the past few years, students from the course have been working closely with Norwich in Bloom to improve the local environment. Students participate in all the activities that would take place in a nursery which include: seed sowing, seedling transplanting, watering and general duties. This gives them a real chance to function in a real work environment while being supported in their learning. Students also learn other skills primarily improving their numeracy skills achieved through stocktaking, measuring flower-beds and keeping records of the weather. Projects have included; planting the flower bed at St Stephen's Church, Castle Mall, Castle Gardens, Norwich Cathedral, Norfolk Show and the Norwich Assembly House. The course may also include literacy and numeracy qualifications where appropriate and skills for work (mostly practical). The course is run over three days per week and the group will normally have a maximum size of eight students.

Additional information

Progression Following completion of the course options could include: Mint Employment Agency, which offers support with job searching and coaching to allow students with a barrier to employment to progress into the world of work. Students should have completed a work placement prior to referral by course tutor. Project Search, a CCN course based at NORSE or NNUH. Work experience allows students to gain real work experience and skills with the support of their colleagues. Other options are available and would be discussed at the parents' evening meeting whilst on the course.
