The HNC covers the fundamentals of horticulture. You will learn both practical skills and develop your underpinning knowledge of plants and their cultivation. About this course
This course will teach you the fundamentals of horticulture, and give you an awareness of the different sectors of the industry. It will look at nursery production, maintenance of gardens and green space and plant retailing, among other subjects. There's plenty of opportunities to develop practical skills as well as your knowledge of plants and their cultivation. Your knowledge of plant identification, propagation, growing on and garden maintenance will be backed by sound business knowledge.

Course programme
You will learn plant identification, plant uses, soil management, plant protection, business management , nursery production, and plant physiology. Practical work will include horticultural techniques for plant propagation and the growing on of plants, garden maintenance, and how to conduct a plant trial on an outdoor plot.
Those studying at the Ayr Campus will also have the opportunity to study modules in Garden Design, as the HNC Garden Design course is not available at this campus.
How Will I LearnMuch of your learning will be practically based. For example, you will propagate plants, pot them up, prune plants, and plant trees and shrubs. Plant identification is taught through guided walks in College grounds and botanic gardens. There are frequent visits to growers, nurseries and gardens
Progression OpportunitiesUpon successful completion of this course, students may apply to join year two of the HND Horticulture or HND Horticulture with Plantsmanship.
Those who have studied the relevant Garden Design modules as part of their Horticulture HNC can apply to progress into Year 2 of the HND Garden Design.
