About this course

As well as giving you practical knowledge of horticulture, this course develops your understanding of the theory behind the practice. It embeds practical skills and knowledge through visits to nurseries, gardens and landscapes, as well as leading scientific organisations. During your second year you'll have the chance to tailor the course to your specific interests by choosing elective modules that directly relate to your career aspirations or personal interests. Some of the electives on offer include  modules offered include: Gardens and Greenspace - for careers in gardening and landscaping, Production Horticulture - where you can concentrate on fruit and vegetable production, Greenhouse protected edible crop production, Ornamental plant production.

Course programme

What Will I Learn

In year one you will follow the HNC Horticulture. In year two, modules include Advanced Plant Propagation, Hardy Ornamental Nursery Stock Production, Landscape Management & Maintenance, and Integrated Approaches to Plant Protection. Elective modules allow specialisation in either crop production practices or landscape horticulture.

How Will I Learn

You will visit nurseries, gardens and landscapes, and also scientific organisations to see how they conduct tests such as seed viability. You will undertake a project in an area of special interest to you, and there is usually an optional study tour.

Progression Opportunities

Upon successful completion of this course, students may apply to join year three of SRUC’s BSc/BSc (Hons) Horticulture or BSc/BSc (Hons) Horticulture with Plantsmanship.
