This option is a second year of study following on from the 90-credit Diploma in Horticulture. It comprises an additional 12 units, including specialist subject and work experience. The course will be a good balance of Horticultural plant knowledge and garden design workshops; covers deeper learning of the industry and business investigations. There will also be practical activities in hard landscaping and estate maintenance, covering construction techniques and projects around the campus.

How will I study?
12 additional specialist units comprising of - Construct and Maintain Decorative Landscape Features; Understand Historical Influences on the Development of Gardens; Construct Horizontal Landscape Surfaces; Principles and Practices of Landscape and Garden Design; Construct and Establish Sports and Amenity Turf Areas; Understand the Principles and Identify the Signs of Pests and Diseases of Trees; Undertake an Investigative Project in the Land-based Sector; Business Management in the Land-based Sector; Understanding Land-based Machinery Operations; Undertake Estate Skills. If aged between 16-18 you will be offered the opportunity to re-sit a GCSE in English and Maths unless a 'C' grade has already been achieved. Functional Skills will be delivered in both English and Maths to level 2 unless they have been achieved already. The opportunity to undertake the Health and Safety Card required to work on site (Self-Funded) and the PA1 /PA6 spraying certificate (Self-Funded).
How will I be taught?
The course will be delivered via a range of methods. Classroom based units will be taught using the latest technology, including distance learning methods for extra work at home. Practical units will be taught in realistic learning environments . Work experience is an essential part of the course and you will need to be able to prove that this is being undertaken as part of your development, a minimum of 300 hours is mandatory for the course.
How will I be assessed?
Units are assessed by a range of methods, including written assignments and practical assessments. There is a research-based project and a work experience unit that is assessed by a work-diary. There are no written exams on this main course. Functional skills exams are carried out on computers.
