Course programme
These RHS qualifications are aimed mainly at vocational candidates looking for the skills and knowledge needed for a career in horticulture.
From 2010 the RHS has changed the format of its qualifications to follow the new national system where the title of a qualification indicates the amount of study, not the level of study. This means that a Certificate can be awarded at either level 2 or 3, and after more study a Diploma can also be awarded at either level. There are now two separate theory Certificates and one Practical Certificate which you can study at Level 2, building up a strong foundation in horticultural theory and practice. This Certificate introduces students to the principles of garden planning, and choosing and growing ornamental and crop plants. What modules are covered?
Unit 1: Garden Features, Plant Selection and Planning
Unit 2: Choice, Establishment and Maintenance of Garden Plants and Lawns
Unit 3: The Production of Outdoor Vegetables and Fruit
Unit 4: Protected Environments in Plant Cultivation
What qualifications will I get?RHS Level 2 Principles of Garden Planning, Establishment & Maintenance
How will I be assessed?National exams in each unit are held twice a year, in February and June. What is the entry process?
Contact Pershore College on 01386 551228
What are the entry requirements?Minimum qualifications: Not applicable
Anyone who has a keen interest in plants and gardening can study for an RHS qualification. There are no formal entry requirements. What else do I need to know?
The qualification can be taken on its own, or with the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth, Propagation and Development to form a full level 2 theory qualification:
The RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture. There is also a Level 2 RHS Practical Certificate which can be studied: together, all three Certificates make up a new RHS Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture. ‘Horticulture' covers a wide range of activities and involves the undertaking of practical tasks. There is an expectation that learners will have a reasonable level of fitness. If a learner is in any doubt about the course details, they should discuss their concerns with the course tutor before they enrol. FEES: The fee quoted does not include exam fees. An additional £25 exam administration fee is payable at the time of enrolment and exam fees are also payable to the RHS. What can I do after this course? You can take one of the other RHS Level 2 horticultural qualifications (above).
- with both Certificates you can go out into employment into amenity or production horticulture, landscape maintenance or garden centre work, with a qualification recognised by the industry You can also progress to a Level 3 horticultural qualification, studying part time: - the RHS offer a full level 3 Diploma in Horticulture, made up of two theory Certificates and a Practical - a Level 3 Certificate in Horticulture (Garden Design or Organic options) will take you into industry at a supervisory level, or on to studying garden design at HE level. You can study full-time on a Level 3 Diploma.Got a question about this course?
