"The porter is that kind person we find at the reception in the hotel, who takes care of the luggage and takes guests to the room. He represents an indispensable professional figure for hotel facilities. The porter not only takes care of the reception but is also responsible for the order and cleanliness of the hotel. The porter is always around the hotel especially in the common areas and therefore being often in contact with the public it is essential that he has good communication skills, that he knows how to interact with guests, that he is kind, helpful, discreet, reliable and that he knows especially managing stressful situations. In grand hotels the porterage service is divided into various specific figures, while in smaller and less structured hotels a single person covers all these different tasks: bell porter, night porter, floor porter, porter assigned to meeting rooms. The duties of the porters depend on the size and type of hotel they work in. In large hotel chains, porters work in harmony with the doorman and with the reception staff on the floors (waiters and housekeepers). The porters who work during the day carry out their duties in the public areas of the hotel and have a lot of contact with customers. In a large hotel, several porters may work. Night shift porters usually work alone and report to the doorman to carry out their duties. As they come on duty from late evening (usually around 11pm) until early morning (around 7am) they have less customer contact than day porters. They deal in particular with areas of the hotel with no access to the public such as security control rooms. They also check that all the safety exits are free and accessible.
