Frank Blaker
Teaching Coordinator
After many years as a mainstream and special needs teacher, Frank Blaker worked as an apprentice to a local builder in rural Somerset. After specialising in using local materials - cob, straw, wood and stone - he now uses all his skills to pass on his knowledge to others.
Course programme
A hands-on practical construction course that is part of our sustainable living courses schedule, using the environmentally friendly sustainable building materials hemp (plant materials dried and chopped into a strawlike product) and lime to build a single skin wall with fabulous insulation properties.
We will be working on an infill project to show how hemp and lime can be used to enhance the insulation properties of an existing agricultural building.
You will work with experienced local tutors to discuss sites, materials, designs and techniques, with a strong emphasis on using real case studies to show how the system works.
We will be working with Chris Brookman from Back To Earth, who is the regional specialist in natural building materials of this kind and is experienced in using them in a range of different environments. He will be able to illustrate how the different materials work as insulators by using our model demonstrators.
Experts will be on hand to ask advice from at all times, course handouts will be provided and some taught theory sessions will be given as the day progresses. This course is suitable for enthusiatic DIY builders, technicians interested in energy-saving materials and professionals in the construction industry looking to expand their knowledge of new materials.
