HSE First Aid at Work

Although the HSE are changing this course to a 3 day course in October 2009, BASP will continue to run the course over 4 days to allow extra time for practical hands on scenarios and AED Defibrilation training for all candidates, thus giving more value and practical expereince to people who also work in the outdoors.

Additional specialized content will be included to meet the needs of clients whose candidates work in specific areas.

Certificate: Valid for 3 years. Certificates are normally issued within 2 weeks of the course completion. Certificates will not be issued unless full payment is received by BASP.

Syllabus: Arrival at Glenmore Lodge is after dinner the night before the course starts.

Day One

• Introduction & registration
• Outline of the Course, the Assessment & Content of the Day
• Ice Breaker
• Aims and Principles
• Accident Procedure
• Anatomy & Physiology of the heart & lungs
• Vital Signs
• Dealing with the Unconscious Casualty [Primary survey + Recovery Position]
• Outdoor Practical - Covering the content of the morning
• Breathing Problems - Choking & drowning
• CPR

Day Two

• Open Forum & Quiz of previous day’s content
• Outline of the Content of the Day
• Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and the use of Defibrillation
• CPR - Pocket masks, Face shields & Jaw thrusts
• Heart Problems and Common Medical Emergencies
• Outdoor Practical – Relating to all the Elements of the Course to Date.
• Shock
• Bleeding
• HSE First Aid Boxes First Aid Kits
• HSE - Record keeping & reporting
• Resume of the content of the day

Day Three

• Open Forum & Quiz of previous day’s content
• Fractures – Including Spinal Injuries, Improvised Splinting & Spinal Immobilisation
• Burns
• Basic Life Support [Protocol – Heart Attack, Drowning etc]
• Multiple Casualty Incidents
• Outdoor Practical - Relating all the elements of the course to date.
• Hypothermia
• Hyperthermia
• Frostbite
• Eye Injuries
• Poisoning
• Secondary Survey
• Resume of the content of the day

Day Four

• Open Forum & Quiz of previous day’s content

• Handling and transportation
• Outdoor Scenarios covering the content of the course

Revalidation of this course should be taken within 3 years by attending a 2 day HSE FAW refresher course.

HSE recomend that you refresh your first aid skills annually, this can be done by attending any first aid course up to one day in duration, for example the BASP 1 day Emergency FAW course also held at Glenmore Lodge.
