Course programme

This commercial qualification allows divers to operate to a maximum working depth of 50m breathing air or enriched air whilst using surface supplied diving techniques.

It is a qualification required by divers who wish to work on inland/inshore diving projects such as construction, demolition, inspection and remedial works. Inshore divers are also becoming vitally important to renewable energy companies for the installation and maintenance of offshore wind, wave and current generators as this new and exciting industry continues to gather pace.

Initial training dives begin in the Academy's indoor tank which gives students the chance to familiarise themselves with the equipment and techniques used during surface supplied diving operations.

During the course Kirby Morgan 18 and 28 band-masks and 17B and 37K helmets are worn, as well as the highly rated Submarine Systems, Proteus II demand helmet and Omega band-mask.

The purpose and function of the diver’s bailout cylinder are taught and practiced during loss of air exercises, as is the importance of setting up and operating the various dive systems now being utilised, including the surface air delivery panels used to supply the diver with primary air and secondary air.

Open water training commences in shallow depth ranges and fundamental skills used by inshore divers are practiced in various scenarios typical to inshore civil engineering diving projects. The use of pneumatic and hydraulic power tools, lifting bags and inspection equipment is practiced at this time.

During the latter phase of the course surface decompression techniques are carried out with everyone becoming well versed in running the twin lock decompression chamber aboard our 38m vessel M.V. Sleat.

Deep assessment dives of 50m are experienced where students have to overcome the effects of nitrogen narcosis whilst performing complex assembly tasks. The stand alone Surface Supplied Course also provides students with the following equipment package.
