About this course

This programme aims to provide an understanding of social processes within the context of space and place. You will learn how economic, political and cultural processes manifest themselves in the urban space, regionally or globally, and how the properties of places influence broader social processes.
You have in-depth knowledge of the history of human geographic thought.
You have advanced empirical and theoretical knowledge within one or more of the following areas: Urban Studies and Planning, Climate Change Adaptation and Social Transformations, Development and Politics, and Economic and Labour Geography.
You have in-depth knowledge of advanced methodological tools and can assess their appropriate use for the analysis of specific issues.
formulate precise research questions, develop a good research design and structure sound argumentation in the analysis of specific issues.
apply scientific methods and tools to the analysis of empirical and theoretical problems and contribute to their understanding and solution.
conduct an independent and clearly delineated piece of research in line with academic and methodological standards and ethical guidelines.
employ analytical, spatial perspectives to new research questions.
present and write knowledge-based material to an academic standard.

The master’s degree programme in human geography is aimed at providing students with academic expertise in the human geographic academic and research field.

Many human geographers work in national and international organizations that are concerned with globalization, development issues, human rights, development aid etc. The UN and diplomatic service also employ human geographers.

Human geographers with knowledge in areas such as municipal and regional development and town planning also work in various ministries, in other parts of the civil service and in local authorities.

Some human geographers work as social scientists in affiliation with various research groups and institutions.

The master’s degree programme in human geography is also a good starting point for those who want to pursue a career as an upper secondary school teacher

Course programme

Programme structure

The master programme runs over four semesters (120 credits). The programme consists of:
  • methodology and methods (20 credits)
  • specialization and elective courses
  • master’s thesis (30 or 60 credits)
In the beginning of the second semester you either choose

Master's students in Human Geography can use the course ISSSV4756 – International Development Studies offered by the Internation Summer School as part of their master's degree. Other courses at master's level offered by the International Summer School may also give credits, but you require a prior approval from the department.

Theory courses at master’s level in sociology are approved without application. Contact the student advisor for further information.

60 credits master's thesis

Field work/data collection starts in the second semester. Work on the master’s thesis gradually increases from the second semester onwards. The master thesis must fall thematically within the chosen spesialization.

If you write a 30 credits master's thesis, you take 30 extra credits of elective courses from the list above or 30 credits of study abroad in the 3rd semester.
