Do you know how to keep yourself fit and healthy? Learn about the workings of the body and what happens when things go wrong.
What does the course involve?
You will begin with cells and work up to all the main organ systems of the body. These include circulation, movement, sensitivity, excretion and reproduction. After reviewing some of the major categories of disease you will look at how the immune system can deal with infectious disease. You will then look more widely at life-style issues, including exercise and diet, and the prevention of disease.
You will complete the course by reviewing some of the ways in which human activity impacts on the environment. The course is intensive as covers a substantial amount of information in one year. Practical work is a strong feature of this course.
What will I study?
The course is divided into three sections: 1 Life Processes, 2 Reproduction, Growth and Development, 3 Relations between Humans, other Organisms and their Environment.
You may follow the course at either Foundation or at Higher level although only Higher level students can gain a pass at A or B. Your practical skills will be assessed via coursework and one 2 hour long exam at the end of the course.

What percentage of the marks come from coursework?
20%.
How will the majority of the lessons be taught?
Lesson sheets are provided, containing questions. The content is taught by the teacher with the aid of the Smart board. Other activities include practical work, group work, videos, use of models and independent research via the internet.
Is there a revision guide/text book?
There is no single revision guide; each student will be allocated a text book for the year and additional reference books are available from the college library.
Are there resources on the college intranet?
Yes - all lesson sheets are available on the intranet.
Are past papers provided for revision?
Past exam questions are used throughout the year for testing. and a mock exam will take place towards the end of the course.
