The hydrologist is the figure who, in the workplace and professionally, deals with hydrology, a science that studies the distribution, movement, biology and chemistry of the water masses of the planet. Composed of multiple fields of scientific study such as hydrography, hydrogeology, hydrogeochemistry and hydrobiology. Although knowledge of hydrological cycles is important for human life and activities, hydrology is a relatively young science and to this day there is no complete theory, just as there is, for example, a theory for electromagnetism. An important feature of many hydrological cycle flows is their spatial and temporal variability, making them even more difficult to model mathematically. In this context, two techniques related to the concepts of probability have great application: the branch of statistics called geostatistics and the theory of random variables. Scientist Robert Elmer Horton is considered the father of modern hydrology. Hydrology studies the water flows that make up the so-called hydrological cycle. The flows from the atmosphere to the earth's surface are called precipitation; rainwater infiltrates the soil or flows on the surface in rivulets, rivers, streams or lakes, or in the subsoil, forming so-called "lateral outflows". Finally, there is evaporation from the soil, from water surfaces, primarily the oceans, but also lakes and other basins, and transpiration from plants and animals, including humans; these flows are termed evapotranspiration. The contribution of living beings to the hydrological cycle is significant, in fact, about half of the amount of precipitation on rainforests is due to the evapotranspiration of the forests themselves.
