Why study this course In the Foundation year you will study three days per week. The focus will be on academic writing skills and numeracy, plus subject-specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree. This course brings together the fields of Computer Science and Mathematics. As such it provides a unique opportunity to explore and learn about subjects that are on the boundaries of both. It offers students the opportunity to combine mathematical skills with problems requiring the use of computers and will prepare students for careers that require high numerical and analytical skills.

Who’s this course for? This course explores those areas of Mathematics that support modelling of systems, the analysis of systems and the encryption of text. The educational aims of this course are: To develop your skills within the core areas of computer science and mathematics. To equip you with the analytical skills that will allow you to work with complex and partial information. To develop your transferable and professional skills to a level required for your future career The emphasis of the course is to provide vocationally skilled programmers and mathematicians who have both a general overview of computer science and mathematics and the knowledge and skills to apply mathematics in practical situations. Applicants must have A Level Maths at grade C or above. Modular structure Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: Analyse complex data and to draw conclusions by synthesising data within the fields of computer science and mathematics. Solve complex computational/mathematical problems by using lateral and logical thinking. Analyse, evaluate and synthesise information from a variety of sources and to be able to develop a justified conclusion. Present coherent arguments in both written and oral forms to appropriate academic or professional standards. Identify and apply appropriate methods for a given problem at the boundary of computer science and mathematics. Evaluate when and why you need information; find, use and communicate it in an ethical manner. A comprehensive understanding of the legal, social and ethical issues affecting the fields of computer science and mathematics. Apply formal and informal creativity and critical thinking techniques in the solution of problems.
