About this course

familiarity with the reception and adaptation history of Ibsen’s works from a global, intercultural perspective
The programme provides training in multiple humanities research methodologies. It thus provides a solid foundation for further research in the humanities in general, and Ibsen Studies in particular, and also offers non-vocational training for teaching, performing and disseminating Ibsen’s works, including the field of cultural administration.
has advanced knowledge within Ibsen studies with emphasis on one or more of the following disciplines: literature, theatre, film and media, history or cultural history
has a special knowledge of theories and methods related to interdisciplinary humanities research, including literary, historical, performance, film, and quantitative analyses
knows the history of Ibsen research and has a good grasp of the relevant source categories and reference literature related to the study of Ibsen both in Norway and internationally
has a thorough knowledge of the context of Ibsen’s life, practical theatre work and writings and the reception and adaptation history of Ibsen’s works from a global, intercultural perspective
has a solid grasp of theoretical discussions about literature as they relate to Ibsen, in particular discussions about the notion of ‘text’ and how this concept relates to theatre, film and media, and written transmission

The program provides a unique opportunity to develop competencies in humanities research, critical thinking, and scholarly writing in a multicultural environment. The Centre attracts a highly diverse group of students from around the globe, and with widely different academic and professional backgrounds.

All courses are taught in English, but students may submit their written work, including qualifying papers, examinations and Master’s theses, in Norwegian.
You can write your master's thesis in cooperation with an external partner. Through this you can get valuable contacts and network that can be useful when you apply for a job after graduation. You can also prepare for working life along the way by participating in career fairs, job search and interview workshops, and career counseling offered to students.

Course programme

Programme structure

The Master’s Degree Programme is a two-year course, starting each autumn. This programme consists of two compulsory courses worth 10 credits (a total of 20 credits), four courses (a total of 40 credits) and a Master's thesis with a writing seminar (60 credits). The full programme represents 120 credits.

In the autumn semester:

Compulsory courses:

  • IBS4000 – Research Ethics, Information Resources and Advanced Academic Writing for Ibsen Studies - Introduction (10 credits) This course is compulsory for students doing their first semester
  • IBS4101 – Ibsen's works: History, Text, Performance (10 credits) (intended for students doing their first semester)

Elective courses:

  • IBS4102 – Henrik Ibsen’s oeuvre in the perspective of its reception history (10 credits) (intended for students doing their first or third semester)
  • IBS4104 – Ibsen and the drama of modernity (discontinued) (10 credits) (intended for students doing their first or third semester)
  • IBS4105 – Ibsen Between Cultures (10 credits) (intended for students doing their first or third semester)
  • IBS4204 – Ibsen in Performance (10 credits) (intended for students doing their first or third semester)

In the spring semester:

Compulsory courses:

  • IBS4001 – Theoretical, Methodological, and Interdisciplinary Approaches to Ibsen Studies (10 credits)
  • IBS4205 – New Perspectives in Ibsen Studies (10 credits)
  • The remaining 10 credits are made up of the students initial work on their Master's thesis

About IBS4390 – Master's Thesis in Ibsen Studies :

Work on the Master's thesis is based on IBS4000 – Research Ethics, Information Resources and Advanced Academic Writing for Ibsen Studies , where the students are to define the problematic issues and produce a preliminary project description for their thesis. In the second semester the students start working on their thesis in connection with the compulsory course IBS4001 – Theoretical, Methodological, and Interdisciplinary Approaches to Ibsen Studies . The thesis is to be completed in the third and fourth semesters. The length of the master's thesis is normally 80-100 pages with 2250 keystrokes per page. Individual supervision is provided throughout the process. The master's thesis is to be written in English or Norwegian. The amount of work required is the equivalent of 60 credits, including the writing seminar.
