What does the course lead to?

You could take your practical skills into almost any industry sector as a technical consultant, systems administrator, operations support or ICT manager to name just a few. As a certain level of computer use is expected in modern society your advanced skills would be highly desirable in many other areas of employment.

What will I study?

In the first year you’ll study two ‘big picture’ themes. First there’s ‘practical problem solving’, which introduces you to the various hardware and software technologies used in ICT, and how you can apply them to different applications in real life. The second theme is ‘living in the digital world’, which gives you a solid grounding in ICT areas like transferring data, backups and the interface between people and ICT systems.

In the second year you’ll build on that strong foundation with another two study themes. In the first theme, ‘the use of ICT in the digital world’, you’ll cover technology developments, how to manage ICT projects, and the use of ICT solutions within organisations. In the second theme, ‘practical issues’, you’ll get hands-on experience by conceiving, designing and implementing a real ICT-related system.

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification. Find out more.

What can I go on to study?

ICT is regarded as a useful qualification to support your entrance onto any degree programme or higher education course. Courses that relate specifically to the skills acquired on the ICT A Level would include network engineering, web technology, artificial intelligence and business information systems.

You could also opt to stay at West Notts and study a Foundation Degree in Networking Technologies or Software Development (validated by Leeds Metropolitan University).

How do I apply?

You don’t need to apply for each subject area you are interested in. Once we have received your application form we will invite you into college for an interview or audition where we will be able to discuss every aspect of the course you have chosen, as well as any alternatives you may be considering. You will also have the opportunity to visit the areas of the college used for your programme choice.
