Campus: Cheadle

Course overview

The Applied A Level in ICT is a full time course of study with 6 units taught in year one and 6 units taught in year two. However you can add a further subject to study alongside in either or both years if you so wish.

The course is designed to allow you to have the opportunity to study and more importantly produce a range of ICT solutions for each very different unit of work. Taking the 12 unit award over 2 years will provide you with the equivalent of 2 A levels.

It is not possible to mention in depth what is in all the units but to give a flavour of the A2 units there is :

Appreciation and usage of Database and Spreadsheet software - an opportunity to actually manage a project using industrial standard software; an appreciation of the need for networks and communication while acting in a consultative role; an opportunity to produce a digital multimedia presentation which combines two or more media types such as text, graphics and video, this allows you to present information in ways that will have a major impact on an audience.

An involvement with Programming, you will experience how to write reasonably complex programs in a visual event-driven language such as Visual Basic.

You will learn that there are a number of stages involved in program development including design, coding of the program itself, testing, documentation, and, finally, evaluation to see if the program meets the requirements of the client.

The aim during the course is to:

Welcome you to a challenge.

Develop a range of lifelong skills.

How you will learn

Tutor input - you will gain knowledge and information in a variety of ways: taught classes, group work, class discussions etc...

Student enquiry - where you will be expected to research areas of interest.

How you will be assessed

All units require you to hand in a design solution to a given problem. However three of the 12 units require research and case study material to be used in an examination.

Special entry requirements

You will be part of a group where male and female students are equally well represented.

The course is suited to students who prefer coursework to exams. As well as students with GCSEs we also welcome students who have been successful on Intermediate GNVQ courses.

Other complementary subjects

Present students take a range of very different AS subjects. You may select from Arts, Humanities and Science.

What you can do after this course

As well as progressing to ICT related jobs the course will prepare you for an ever increasing number of courses in Higher Education. These include Business IT, Information Systems and Multimedia. The skills gained are suitable for all future courses.

What the students say

Hannah liked the course, once she understood the software, she could work independently.
