The Programme
This qualification is a practical, work-related course, which has been designed to meet the needs of those who wish to work in ICT, systems analysis and design, and software engineering. It will also give students a good grounding for work in business and other areas of the IT industry.
The qualification is available as an Award (equivalent to one A Level), Certificate (two A Levels) and full Diploma (three A Levels).
The Programme Content
The Diploma requires completion of nine units in each year, the Certificate requires six units, and the Award requires three.
Below is an illustration of the units for the first year of the course:
Unit 1: Communication and Employability Skills for IT (compulsory unit)
Unit 2: Computer Systems (compulsory unit)
Unit 3: Information Systems (compulsory unit for Certificate & Diploma)
Unit 35: Impact of the Use of IT on Business Systems (compulsory unit for Certificate & Diploma)
Unit 5: Advanced Database Skills
Unit 6: Advanced Spreadsheet Skills
Unit 13: Human Computer Interaction
Unit 16: Maintaining Computer Systems
Unit 21: Website Production and Management
(Unit choices for the new academic year may be subject to change.
Progression / Careers
BTEC National Diploma is equivalent to three A levels, so students have the choice of either seeking employment immediately (eg. as a trainee engineer or web designer) or going into Higher Education first. Further studies may include a degree or BTEC Higher National Diploma in subjects such as Computing, IT for Practitioners or Software Engineering.
If you go on to study for a degree, Foundation Degrees in Computing or Business Computing are available at North Devon College. These count as two years of a three year degree.
