About this course

Students should possess one of the following: At least five GCSEs at grade E or above, one of which must be in Maths or English. A Merit grade or above for a BTEC Introductory Diploma. A Merit grade or above for a GNVQ Foundation qualification (six units).

The Programme
The BTEC First Diploma for ICT Practitioners is a practical, work-related course. It introduces students to various aspects of information and communication technology and provides a good basis to go on to more advanced work-related qualifications that use ICT.
The Programme Content
The BTEC First Diploma for ICT Practitioners is made up of six units, all assessed through coursework assignments.
The units assessed in 2008/09 were:
- Using ICT to Present Information
- Introduction to Computer Systems
- Networking Essentials
- Website Development
- Customising Applications Software
- Installing Hardware Components

Progression / Careers
A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs at grades A*-C. The actual equivalent GCSE grade depends on the final overall grade achieved for the diploma. The qualification provides a good grounding to go on to a more advanced course in ICT or as an all-round ICT foundation that can be applied in other disciplines. It also prepares students for employment in junior or trainee roles using ICT in office environments.
