COURSE DESCRIPTION

A three and a half day structured programme aimed at developing team leaders/first line managers to provide workplace Coaching to members of their team or others whom they manage.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • To provide candidates with an understanding of coaching and it's role improving team members' performance.
  • To develop candidates' skills to perform effectively as workplace coaches.

The programme is divided into 7 practical ½ day segments (including an induction session) over 2 modules:

Module 1 - Coaching Skills and Standards for Managers (2 ½ Days)
Module 2 - The Coaching Process for Managers (1 Day)

PROGRAMME CONTENT
Induction Session
The programme commences with an Induction session that aims to:

  • Provide candidates with the necessary knowledge to work towards the ILM Level 3

Certificate in Coaching for Team Leaders and First Line Management

  • Identify the expectations and benefits of the award.
  • Explain:

o The format of the programme.
o The assessment process.
o Roles and responsibilities.

COACHING SKILLS AND STANDARDS FOR MANAGERS
Providing the knowledge and skills necessary to appreciate the coaching role and the processes involved in that role.

Segment 1: Good Practice in Coaching


Learning Outcomes:

  • To understand the role of the Coach in the workplace.
  • To identify what makes an effective Coach.
  • To define typical organisational barriers to Coaching and consider possible solutions.

Segment 2: Learning Styles and Barriers to Effective Learning

Learning Outcomes:

  • To examine various models for determining learning.
  • To define personal barriers to Coaching and consider possible solutions.
  • To be able to match the Coaching approach with an identified learning style.

Segment 3: Evaluate and Plan use of Resources

Learning Outcomes:

  • To increase awareness of available learning resources and support services.
  • To define what's needed to effectively plan and prepare a Coaching session.
  • To know when a situation goes beyond the Coach's competence and what to do about it.

Segment 4: Communication Skills in Coaching

Learning Outcomes:

  • To recognises the basic difference between training (telling) and coaching (asking) and implications for appropriate communication skills
  • To practice core communications skills for Coaching.

o Listening/Questioning skills.
o Summarising and feedback skills.
o Non Verbal skills.
o Observation skills.
Segment 5: Recording & Assessing Learning

Learning Outcomes:

  • To be able to assess achievement of learning objectives.
  • To be able to keep records.
  • To effectively evaluate performance.

THE COACHING PROCESS FOR MANAGERS
Providing the framework for practical coaching activity.

Segment 1: Agreeing Learning Goals for Coaching

Learning Outcomes:

  • To align Organisational, Team & Individual objectives.
  • To ensure Coaching is the most effective development medium.
  • To setting Coaching objectives.
  • To define alternative learning methods that can be used to support occupational development.

Segment 2: - Planning a Coaching Programme

Learning Outcomes:

  • To establish & match learning objectives with knowledge experience & learning style.
  • To plan and develop a Coaching strategy.
  • To prepare material and resources and complete a risk assessment.
  • To identify characteristics of an effective coaching plan (specific learning outcomes, activities, information and resources required).

Assessment:

  • Each participant must complete to a satisfactory national standard.
  • A Work-based Assignment (approximately 2 hours, or a nominal 750-1000 words), based on the first 5 segments.
  • Six hours practical Coaching activity.
  • A Coaching Diary, recording personal development, Coaching practice and reflections on that practice.
