Course programme

This course is for practitioners who wish to apply the High/Scope Approach in their early years setting. This is a nine-day course, comprising eighteen 2.5- hour sessions. The sessions are spread over several months and can be delivered as full days, half days or twilight sessions, or any combination of these.

High/Scope trainers endeavour to make each session stimulating, enjoyable and relevant to the needs of course members. Training combines practical activities, videos and focused discussion and our trainers take opportunities to find out about your early years setting, so that your training can be personalised. As part of the course, the trainer will visit you in your setting. This provides an opportunity to share your achievements so far and to discuss future development.

This course gives practitioners the opportunity to develop their professional expertise and to share ideas, issues and achievements in a supportive atmosphere.

The course covers all elements of the High/Scope Approach:

* Active Learning
* Learning Environment
* Daily Routine
* Plan-Do-Review
* Small Group Time
* Adult's Role (Supportive Styles of Interaction and Effective Communication)
* Child and Family
* Key Experiences
* Observation
* Record Keeping
* Accountability
* Working in a Team.

The course requires participants to complete assignments. These involve reading, making observations and implementing and assessing changes. Course members also write a course journal. All sessions must be attended. On satisfactory completion of the course, participants achieve certification by the High/Scope Institute. The course provides underpinning knowledge for NVQ level 3.

In addition to the course for early years settings, there are specialised curriculum implementation courses for those working with children from 0-3 years old and for those working with children with special educational needs.
