You will have the opportunity to make a variety of jewellery items including bracelets, earrings, necklaces and rings. The techniques used will range from traditional beading and wire work to using more contemporary materials like polymer clay. Through the work in class, you will learn how to use a range of jewellery tools and materials to assemble your own jewellery.You will also be required to work on a personal project, which will incorporate the ideas and methods covered in class in order to design your own jewellery. You will undertake research to aid the production of your jewellery making and create a portfolio charting your progress with accompanying reflective written work.

About this course

The course is suitable for learners looking to experiment with different materials and techniques in order to develop a more personal style of jewellery making.

Although not essential, it is advisable that learners have attended a previous jewellery making course, which has covered basic skills.It is recommended that you have the ESOL Skills for Life Entry Level 3 Certificate or a good level of numeracy and literacy – as you will need to read handouts and produce a portfolio of work. You should also be dexterous (able to hold and use equipment).

Course programme

How will I learn?

This is a hands-on course and you learn by doing. There are step-by-step demonstrations for you to follow. The tutor is always on hand to help you create and finish a piece of jewellery.

How will my progress be monitored and assessed?

You will be continually monitored and assessed by your tutor and you will produce a portfolio of your work.

Progression opportunities

You can progress onto a range of art and craft courses. Your tutor will be able to give you advice and guidance.

What equipment or materials will I need to provide?

A ring binder and plastic pockets for your work.
You will need to buy a small pack of materials for each session. All materials will be supplied for you and will cost around £2.50 each week. You may wish to supplement your pack with your own beads. The tutor will have enough equipment to share. However, if you wish to provide your own, you will need chain-nosed pliers, round-nosed pliers and cutters (these can be obtained from any craft store or online at numerous beading sites).

What other support is available?

Help with numeracy or literacy is available. ICT drop-in sessions are available during term time and are open to all learners. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Learner Support Funding is available for equipment, childcare and travel to learners who qualify.
