About this course

In the program you can immerse yourself in various branches of information technology like mobile devices, sensors and robots, all of which provide different opportunities for interaction with people. It is also possible to go into depth within the field of applications. You will learn to design solutions for health, services or energy and environment.

This master programme gives you the interdisciplinary competence you need to understand which role information technology plays in society and how technology can be used to solve important tasks. You learn about the interaction between digital and social-human, and how you can use this understanding in design.

In the master thesis you can work with specific issues, such as new forms of interaction and technologies, or new ways to work. This may apply in many kinds of environments: Do you want to create the future computer system for the major hospitals? Do you see for yourself to develop a robot that may be with your old grandfather? Then you've come right.
have a solid understanding of sentral theories and concepts.
understand possibilities and limitations within the use of IT solutions
have an understanding of the IT systems life cycle: From design to programming, implementation, use and further development needs
know about social and ethical IT challenges

This master's degree programme provides the basis for independent professional practice in relationships where an advanced insight into the subject is necessary. The information sector needs solid IT expertise in all areas.

developing IT solutions where the users' needs and requirements are most important
make technology functional and user-friendly
working in project groups
mobile health (mHealth) projects and contribute to better health among mothers and children in developing countries
managing IT projects, and often be responsible for contact with customers
try to find new solutions or working on a more detailed level with something that already exists, but requires improvement
structure and modeling of all types of large information systems
development of web pages, apps or various types of information services
start your own IT business
Through the work of writing a master's thesis in computer science, you learn to work independently and to organize and plan your own work within specific deadlines. You learn to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge that you have acquired through your study program in your own original work, a master's thesis. During the master's studies you will also learn to write and work with scientific material - you learn to collaborate with others on research questions and communicate on academic issues, analyzes and conclusions in the field of computer science. You will be able to convey your own work and to acquire and relate to the feedback you receive.

Master's thesis and courses

The choice of courses and the theme of the Master's thesis is done in consultion with your supervisor in the first semester. This choice also determines the specialization you follow.

The Master’s programme is affiliated with two research groups at the Department of Informatics:

  • Design of Information Systems (DESIGN)
  • Information Systems (IS)

How many Master's courses you take depends on whether you are going to write a long or a short Master's thesis. If you choose to write a long Master's thesis, the thesis consists of 60 ECTS credits and you take 60 ECTS credit with courses. A short thesis consist of 30 ECTS credits and you take 90 ECTS credit with courses. At least 30 credits must be from the program structure.

All students must take one mandatory course in the second semester:

  • IN5000 - Qualitative Research Methods

In addition, the different specialisations have demands regarding mandatory and recommended courses.

The Master's thesis is an independent research project carried out under supervision that allows you to immerse yourself in a topic of particular interest. You can write a thesis within the various specializations. Note that the different specializations might offer courses that require that you have taken certain courses on bachelor's level.

The Master's thesis must be presented publicly at the end of the last semester. Following the presentation, an oral examination with the sensors and supervisor will be given regarding the assignment.
