The course consists of four units, two will be studied for AS and two for A2.
Unit 1 INFO1 Practical Problem Solving in the Digital World
This unit should provide students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of the development of ICT systems through practical experience in using a range of applications software in a structured way. Students should then be able to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding gained from this practical work to the solution of problems.
Topics studied will include:
Design of solutions
Selection and use of input, storage and output devices and media
Selection of appropriate hardware and software
Implementation, testing and evaluation of ICT related solutions
Unit 2 INFO2 Living in the Digital World
This unit is designed to give students the wider picture of the use of ICT and to enable the understanding of basic terms and concepts involved in the study of the subject. Students should be able to discuss and comment on issues from a position of knowledge and they can do this only if they have the knowledge and understanding that underpins the subject.
Topic covered will include:
Factors affecting the use of ICT
The consequences of the use of ICT
What ICT can provide
Data and information
People and ICT systems
Safety and security of data in ICT systems
Backup and recovery
Unit 3 INFO3 The Use of ICT in the Digital World
This unit looks at the fast changing subject of ICT, including developments in technology and ICT system capabilities, and how this might affect the world that makes use of ICT.

Future developments
Managing ICT
ICT strategy
Developing ICT solutions
Development methods
Training and supporting users
Unit 4 INFO4 Coursework: Practical Issues Involved in the Use of ICT in the Digital World.
This unit provides students with the opportunity to complete a substantial project involving the production of an ICT-related system over an extended period of time

Course programme
The course is classroom based with 4.5 hours contact time in year 1 for AS and in year 2 for A2. There will be continuous assessment throughout the year through homework, class tests and mock examinations.

INFO1 - 1.5 hour examination

INFO3 - two hour examination
INFO4 - coursework
Staying with Gower College Swansea, you could progress on to the HND Applied Computing Progression can be to a higher education course or to employment. Competition for IT graduates has placed them above lawyers and engineers in commanding high salaries. Many large companies are recruiting IT graduates actively and there are excellent opportunities to work abroad.
A C grade at GSCE mathemetics is essential.
