Course programme
Content
The course is structured to develop the creativity, design knowledge and skills needed by people who want to work as inter-disciplinary practitioners. During the course there are many opportunities for collaboration and exchanges between LCC and Cranfield University through group design projects, lecture programmes, exchange trips, joint critiques, podcasting and Second Life. This rich collaboration will encourage you to develop your design thinking, methodologies and skills and apply them to new contexts within industry, services and the public sector. You will work on projects in multi-disciplinary teams of three or four with students from Cranfield who come from engineering, science and technology-based backgrounds.
Structure
On the programme you will have the opportunity to take part in design projects, workshops and study tours. These will be embedded in a sound theoretical framework of lectures, case studies, seminars and tutorials.
Phases 1 & 2 of the course will provide you with a detailed knowledge of core theory and skills in innovation and creativity. The skills and knowledge obtained will enable you to articulate design ideas, observations and solutions creatively as designers, as well as demonstrating rigour and critical evaluation in your work. You will be able to apply your design thinking strategically and add value to new and challenging contexts.
Phase 1
- Group Design Project
- The Creative Context
- Materials Manufacturing and Prototypologies
Phase 2
- Innovation and Project Management
- Elective A: Design Management and Design Futures or Branded Environments
- Elective B: Design Innovation and Sustainability or Politics in Design
- Individual Concept Development
In Phases 1 & 2, the subjects run concurrently. You will participate in design projects, workshops and study tours. This will be supported with a series of lectures, case studies, seminars and tutorials.
Phase 3 builds on the knowledge and skills you have acquired and applies these to the creation of original design research projects. This involves the completion of a Major Project on the basis of extensive research, investigation and a firm methodological approach. The course will challenge existing orthodoxies and encourage design related communication, service and product innovation problems to form the focus of the final Major Project.
Phase 3
- Major Project - practical and report OR thesis
The final Major Project will need to demonstrate the testing of ideas, exploring the context of the project as well as identifying key issues such as appropriate discourses, research methodologies, materials and media through which you can effectively communicate your ideas.
Dedication
1 year (45 weeks), part-time.
