This apprenticeship could see you working for a maintenance or installation contractor or you may decide to start your own business once qualified. Apprentices who work for electrical installation contractors will be involved in a range of work including installing, testing and maintenance of electrical circuits and equipment found in homes, offices and factories.
This is an interesting area of work and your duties could include: Working from plans and drawings to install different types of wiring and enclosures. Connecting lighting, switches and socket outlets. Fitting electrical equipment e.g. air conditioning. Installing consumer units and distribution boards. Wiring fire alarms and security systems e.g. CCTV. Working with new environmental technologies e.g. photo voltaic systems. Inspecting and testing new and existing circuits and fault finding and repair of circuits and equipment.

Course programme

Entry Requirements

A good level of secondary education is expected and many employers expect you to have maths and English GCSE at a C grade or above. Employers also look for skills like motivation, good interpersonal skills, good communication skills and a willingness to learn and will set their own specifications depending on the role.

Delivery and Assessment

Delivery carried out in the classroom and workshop over a 3 year period on a day relase from work. Assessment will be carried out primarily in the workplace to assess and measure competence at a range of tasks. This will be completed in the final fourth year of the apprenticeship along with the end point assessment which will be carried out as an AM2 test.

Progression

Design courses, HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering

Career Opportunities

  • Apprentices who complete the course can go on to do advanced careers such as contracts manager
  • installation designer or start there own business and become their own boss.
