Interactive Media BTEC National Diploma

Aim This two year course focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to work in the rapidly growing interactive media industry. This entails all types of animation, working in film and television, web design, photography, drawing, interactive CD ROM design, magazine design, graphics, computer graphics, games design, advertising and sound. In this course learners participate in working projects, enter design/film competitions and submit animation and film work into film festivals.

Content Learners must complete the five core units, at least nine units from the Interactive Media specialist units and complete the remaining 240 guided learning hours from the professional specialist units.

Core units:
· Visual recording in art and design (drawing based unit)
· Materials, techniques and processes in art and design
· Ideas and concepts in art and design
· Visual communication in art and design
· Contextual influences in art and design.

Specialist units may include:
· Application, exploration and realisation in art and design. In this unit learners will have the opportunity to write their own project in any chosen subject area within interactive media.
· Personal and professional development in art and design. In this unit learners will prepare and produce a portfolio of work ready to take for interview at university or for industry. It also involves the application process of UCAS forms/entry for university and personal statements.
· Computers in art and design 60 hour unit. Through this unit learners will learn a range of software programmes.

Interactive Media Specialist Units:
· Film and video editing
· Image manipulation computer applications
· 2D Animation production
· Interactive media authoring
· Graphic image making
· Desktop publishing computer applications
· Website design
· Audio production processes and techniques.

Learners will then have the opportunity to select any two units from the specialist units enabling them to have a choice in the career direction such as:
· Understanding video technology
· Digital storytelling
· Developing costume design
· Basic makeup design and application
· Introduction to music technology
· Computer game design
· Sound for computer games
· Stop motion animation production
· Drawing concept art for computer games
· Web animation and interactive media
· Pre-production techniques for media industries
· 3D animation
· Digital image capture and editing.

Progression/career opportunities Students may progress to Higher Education courses or find employment in a wide range of media and music organisations.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
