Why BA(Hons) Interior Architecture?
Most of the buildings we will inhabit in 2050 have already been built. Whether they are creating hospitals where people get better faster, offices where workers are more productive, or schools where people learn better, the role of the interior architect is to help society make the most of these. This is while considering how they can become more energy-efficient, comfortable and sustainable spaces.
The products of design surround us, from the everyday objects we use to the spaces we occupy both inside and outside. There are many design disciplines which practice at a variety of scales to form our human environment. The factors influencing design decisions and the design process are similar to each of these disciplines. Through developing your design process and understanding at a variety of scales, you will be better equipped for your chosen degree.
Why study our course?
On this course you will consider all aspects of interior architecture: from psychology and social conditions, to structure, furniture design and materials, to sound and light. Synthesising these elements, you will learn how to rethink existing buildings and convert them to suit a range of uses. You will apply this to temporary structures and installations including theatre, exhibition and interpretation. Alongside, you will develop professional skills in sketching, CAD, design strategies, modelling and making.
You with the opportunity to refine your design skills at a variety of scales and the course will assist you with raising your awareness of the historical, cultural, mechanical and environmental factors which influence design.
We have been ranked 6th nationally for Architecture in The Guardian University League Tables 2017.

Course programme

Content

The core of the student learning experience is the Design Studio. Design Studios are structured around different themes in each year.

Year 0 (Foundation Year)

You will study the following modules:

  • Foundation Project
  • Foundation in Design Communications
  • Foundation Design Studio
  • Foundation Design History
  • Foundation Engineering for Designers

You will study the Foundation Year alongside students from our other Architecture and Product Design courses, and so you may be able to transfer to a course in one of these areas at the end of the Foundation Year.

The normal expectation is that you must pass all Year 0 modules before progressing to Year 1.

Year 1

Introduces you to the fundamentals of design, building structure and concepts of space.

  • Interior Architecture Design Studio 1
  • Technical Studio
  • Objects and Experiences
  • Making of Place

Year 2

Focuses on designing new spaces/structures/uses within the form of an existing building.

  • Interior Architecture Design Studio 2
  • History of Architecture
  • IT for Designers
  • Research and Design Strategies
  • Aesthetics and Product Language

Final year

This year engages more fully with a building in terms of structural and architectural adaptation.

  • Interior Architecture Design Studio 3
  • Theories of Architecture and their Application to Design
  • Collaborative Practice
  • Conserving Buildings and Places
  • Dissertation

Design Studios include a rich variety of conceptual and pragmatic projects, including: furniture, materiality, temporary structures and installations, theatre, lighting and architectural narrative. These culminate in the final year with a major project which combines rigorous research with a fully integrated design project for the creative reuse of an existing building. In addition to carrying out design tasks students are introduced to a variety of techniques including CAD, design strategies, drawing, modelling and making.

A strong emphasis of the learning approach will be to engage with current practice in architecture and design, and to gain a full appreciation of the work of related disciplines, such as art and film. You will undertake a live project and/or develop submissions for design competitions. As well as study design computing, research and design strategies and engage in collaborative work with related disciplines.

All students will complete a dissertation on a theoretical subject which underpins their final year design project. This advanced investigation provides you with the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of a particular subject area within the field of interior architecture.

The University continually enhances our offer by responding to feedback from our students andother stakeholders, ensuring the curriculum is kept up to date and our graduates are equippedwith the knowledge and skills they need for the real world. This may result in changes to thecourse. If changes to your course are approved we will inform you.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching methods are varied depending on the module; lectures, project work and tutorials all have a part.

The teaching staff provide a friendly, enabling environment for learning. They are also actively engaged in research or professional practice, ensuring that you learn directly from the latest academic and business developments.

For more details see our full glossary of learning and teaching terms.

Assessment

Assessment is achieved through a balance of coursework and examinations. Examinations are held in either January or May/June. Coursework will be a variety of essays, reports, surveys, design projects, teamwork or progress tests.

You are encouraged to do 'formative work' to prepare for assessments: this does not count towards your marks but the feedback which you receive will help you to improve your performance. Support is available for students who have difficulties with numeracy, IT, literacy and study skills.

For more details see our full glossary of assessment terms.
