Course programme

The IFP has been designed as a two-stage programme, so you’ll sign up to both stages:

  • Stage 1: Intensive English language development and study skills support
  • Stage 2: first year of your chosen with-foundation-year programme.

On successful completion of the foundation year you’ll then move onto your full UK degree programme at Bucks.

Building your skills

A big part of the IFP is about getting your study skills up to the required level. But we’ll also focus on your employability, and developing your subject knowledge in your chosen field.

You’ll learn by taking part in group projects related to your particular subject, and to developing your wider skills. Activities could range from designing a board game to exploring opportunities for voluntary community work.

You’ll study alongside native speakers, helping you further develop your language skills and get to know the UK culture.

You’ll also have access to ongoing language support as you progress through your degree, through our Learning Development Unit, including timetabled classes and individual language support.

A supportive environment

We welcome people of all academic abilities onto the IFP (provided you have an IELTS score of at least 5.0 with no band below 4.5), and use different activities and projects to bring the teaching to life. You’ll be joining a supportive community of friendly staff and students, and be able to learn in ways that build your confidence, and suit your learning style.

By the end of your foundation year, we’ll make sure you have:

  • the English language skills you need to proceed to a full UK degree programme
  • a good understanding of the UK higher education system and the academic skills needed to study at degree level
  • a good foundation of knowledge in your chosen subject area.

Flexibility to change

If you reach the end of your foundation year, and change your mind about the subject you’re studying, you may be able to move onto a different degree programme at Bucks. Your course leader will be able to discuss the options available to you.
